2020 Crisis Council
Topic: The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962
INTRODUCTION TO COMMITTEE:
The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, concerned the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, following the Soviet’s deployment of a ballistic missile on Cuba. The tension resulting in this crisis, climaxed after the US administrations’ failed invasive landing operation. Additionally, the presence of the United States’ Air Forces’ ballistic missiles in Turkey and Italy heightened pressure upon the Soviet Union.
Therefore, the delegates will represent the various actors, including representatives from Cuba, the Soviet Union and the United States. These positions will include integral policy decision makers involved in the 13 day Crisis, beginning from October 14th to October 27th. Delegates will have to ensure their goals are reached during the 13 day confrontation described as the closest that the Cold War had come to escalating into a nuclear-war.
THE ISSUE:
This historical committee will involve the preceding discussions surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis, in October 1962. The considerations of the opposing powers of the United States and the Soviet Union should be represented by contemplating each administrations’ intentions and ambitions during the Cold War. Additionally, as the integral stakeholder of the crisis, Cuba should be reflected by considering both its defensive and offensive position following the failed American-led Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. In this committee, secret and public negotiations between the Soviet Union’s administration and Fidel Castro will take place, regarding the Cuban request for the nuclear missile placement as a deterrent. Alongside this, discussions within the United States’ White House will occur, entailing the intense negotiations between President Kennedy and Khrushchev, as well as potential meetings from external security bodies, to implement their desired outcome.
